Stereotype getting to know KFM’s Keri Miller
Keri Miller
By Carey Saaiman
When you meet Keri Miller, you are sure to meet a down-to-earth friendly soul. She executes this on her radio show on Kfm along with Lee Downs, and like she says, “just happens to keep you company on your drive home.”
Keri grew up in Durban, KZN, but knew Cape Town was the place for her to be. She studied in the direction related to radio but had no idea it was her passion until she spent 2 and a half years at a retail radio, after she had studied Drama and Performing Arts in 2004. Since then the rest has been history, and she’s persevered to greater heights in her own craft because she refused to give up. “You need to find that balance between being pushy and then taking a step back. Don’t be a pain- but don’t just wait for them to call you back,” she says.
This method seemed to have worked for Keri, who is now in the music ‘business’. She regards her craft as a business like any other because she is part of the product, and the science comes is how you sell yourself-while her art is how passionate she is about selling the product. “It is a structured idea that allows for impromptu,” Keri explains when asked how she approaches the preparation of her radio show.
Too much whining and not enough ‘doing’ is what Keri regards as the world’s biggest problem today. With her infectious laugh and happy personality many have drawn to her show with Lee Downs, as the listeners can get actively involved and enjoy the constant light-hearted debates between herself and Lee as Keri is highly opinionated and, well, a woman.
Her favourite current artists are Seed and Gentleman (from Germany), and local artists Chad Saaiman, Goodluck, Goldfish and The Rudimentals. With years of trying to get her feet on Cape Town’s ground, Keri has no plans to leave just yet.
“It’s Miller time!”
