StereoType getting to know KFM’s Benito Vergotine

“Music is magical; it transforms, it inspires and it provokes. Music is intrinsic to our experience; it is very powerful.”

The bubbly, warm and compassionate Benito Vergotine studied towards a Law Degree at UCT, and steered away from that in the middle of the course to trigger his love for the Arts. He believes his craft is art with a scientific approach-the art of it is to connect effectively with listeners, and the science is the research and unearthing of talent.

These are wise words from the Port Elizabeth-bred Benito who’s been a radio DJ at Kfm for more than 10 years, and in between he develops communication strategies for companies. He is proud of the change Kfm has made to make our country a better place with their LEAD SA initiative.

“Lead SA is building towards a future and a country we can all be proud of; it invokes responsible citizenship and encourages helping our compatriots,” he says. When it comes to radio, he believes that it all comes down to communicating, and the content of your show is what would set you apart from the next DJ.

“Effective communicating equals popularity,” he says.

Poverty, hunger and deprivation from education are the three issues Benito regards as the most serious problems in the world right now. With no means or ability to fix it for everybody, he says charity begins at home. With some sound advice for anyone about to enter the real world, Benito urges kids to be natural, never give up, be passionate and tell compelling stories.

“Focus, prepare constantly, absorb everything you see, read and feel,” is Benito’s advice for aspiring radio DJ’s who wish to be just like him.
