After months of hard work in the studio, Byron Clarke’s debut album “Self Inflicted” is finally complete. The full StereoType Records team gathered at Lee’s place (affectionately known as The Embassy) on Friday night as Self Inflicted was popped in to the CD player for the first time.
The room was filled with an expectant hush as the first notes of The Rain flooded out of the speakers and washed over us, the eager, anxious listeners. This was a big moment. We’d all been working hard on this album and our fingers hurt from crossing them -it just had to be good.
And it is. Better than good in fact. A lot better.
The ever energetic Byron was bouncing around the room listening the full album for the first time while Ebrahim (Mr Mallum to those in the know) stood and nodded sagely on the side. As track after track reeled off the disc, the mood in the room reached a euphoric level. We’ve produced an amazing album and now all we need to do is get it to you. When I asked Byron what he thought of the finished product, he could do little more than smile. I suspect that smiling was all he could to stop from crying tears of joy.
Over the course of last year, Byron has spilled his innermost thoughts and feelings in to his music and to finally hear it all come together is an awesome experience. Personally, I’m impressed that he didn’t shed a tear or two.
The next step in the process is the album artwork. I met with the equallly talented other Clarke, Byron’s twin brother Alain, on Monday to finalise the concept for the album. We painstakingly built the colour palette and have finished the story board for the photo shoot which will take place in the very near future. Having developed and designed the artwork for Chad Saaiman’s SAMA nominated album “Chasing Melodies,” Alain is no stranger to album artwork.
Now that we have the music, we need to decide on the song order to get the flow and feeling of the album just right. Once the album is arranged, the photo shoot and cover design have been completed, we’ll be sending the master disc off the the manufacturer.
Self Inflicted has been an emotional, fulfilling and educational experience for all us. And this is only the beginning og the journey.
